A Simple Content Production System for a Small Business
Most small business owners don't struggle with ideas. They struggle with the repeated work of turning an idea into a finished post, week after week, without it eating their whole day.
Where the system breaks down
The usual pattern looks like this: the owner posts when they feel inspired, skips a few weeks when things get busy, then tries to catch up with a rushed post that doesn't really say anything. There's no process behind it, just willpower, and willpower runs out. The fix isn't more creativity. It's a small, repeatable routine that doesn't depend on motivation.
The one-hour batch
Set aside one hour, once a week, for raw material only. No writing captions, no designing graphics, just collecting. Walk around the shop and take five photos. Record two thirty-second clips answering common customer questions. Jot down one short story from that week, a tricky job you solved, a question someone asked twice. That's it. This hour feels almost too easy, which is exactly why it works.
One idea, several formats
The real system is in what happens after the batch. Each piece of raw material gets reused in more than one place instead of being used once and forgotten. This is where a small business can produce a week's worth of content from one short session instead of starting from zero every time.
- A short video clip becomes a quote graphic for Instagram and a written tip for the email newsletter
- A question answered in person becomes a Google Business Profile post and an entry on the website's FAQ page
- A before-and-after photo becomes both a review request prompt for that customer and a portfolio image on the website
Keep a simple log
Track what went out and where, even in a basic spreadsheet or a notes app. Two columns are enough: what was posted, and where it went. Once a month, glance back at it. You'll notice patterns, maybe videos get more replies than photos, or the FAQ posts bring in more questions than expected. The system doesn't need to be clever. It just needs to run every week without anyone having to think too hard about it.
